Between the lake Maggiore and the lake of Mergozzo is located the Montorfano ancient quarry of white granite ,has represented and represent today an important economic resource for the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Over the centuries this great quarry provided the material for many artwork among which the basilica of S.Paul outside the walls in Rome or the roman church of Saint John Baptist among the most important and well preserved of the area.
The Montorfano is reachable by the “blue path”, a trekking path accessible all the year also for not very expert hikers that start from the village of Mergozzo and runs along the same lake.
